Rock Legend: Pink Floyd

Rock Legend: Pink FloydThe musical impact made by Pink Floyd is significant and everlasting, and their contribution to popular music has inspired and creatively influenced many throughout the years. Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason have collectively produced a sound and style that continues to resonate with listeners around the world, and offers those who wish to take up the offer, a journey beyond constraints and outside the ordinary.

Their sonic soundscapes are complexly epic and majestic, real and unreal, and move stylishly between quiet control and urgent, emotional outpourings. Shifting from their earlier psychedelic and ‘space rock’ progressive sound to a more structured (yet still expansive) modern rock format, the band found mainstream success through the 1970’s with their classic ‘concept’ albums Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall.

My poster design reflects the highly improvised and experimental earlier period of their career, visually representing the mysterious and vast inner and outer space moods of those pioneering psychedelic days.

Pro pellere (propulsion)

Propulsion started life simply as a musical composition project for me to experiment with in GarageBand, but then grew to include a supporting video clip and poster design. The song itself triggered a lot of imagery in my mind, particularly about motion, force and energy, so I felt quite compelled to go beyond just the tune itself and to make this a much larger venture than originally intended.

All of the space imagery and audio files are from NASA via the DVIDS (Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System) website, which allows anyone to create an account and freely download content for use.

The clip was produced in iMovie, with all of the various typographical elements created in Illustrator, and the images edited, altered and prepared in Photoshop. The poster and icon design captures all the impressive power and spectacle of a space launch, and is another Illustrator/Photoshop piece.

Musical interlude: Between Stars

A short soundtrack styled tune (created in GarageBand), with an interstellar space sound and electronic vibe. The icon artwork for this song features multiple blurred photographs of movement, overlaid in Photoshop with layer styles used for image editing and colour enhancement.

Vehicle design: Venusian scout ship

Venusian scout ship

Amongst the many sketched ideas I’ve produced recently, I have been thinking about some space vehicle designs, and decided that I would produce a tighter concept of this compact low altitude reconnaissance vehicle. I like the chunky wedge shape of this design and envision this as a highly manoeuvrable exploration, observation and security patrol vehicle.
